NeutralToken Foundation Launches Privacy-First Age Verification Protocol Following Supreme Court Decision

July 3, 2025

NeutralToken Foundation today announced the release of the NeutralToken protocol, an open standard designed to help online platforms comply with rising age-verification requirements without sacrificing user privacy, security, or freedom of expression.

The announcement comes in the wake of the U.S. Supreme Court's decision in Free Speech Coalition, Inc. v. Paxton, which declined to block enforcement of Texas's age-verification law for adult content platforms. As similar laws take effect in multiple states, platforms face mounting pressure to implement compliance solutions—often at the expense of user anonymity and data protection.

"This ruling underscores the urgent need for alternatives to invasive, centralized age verification systems," said Mike Madison, Chair of the NeutralToken Foundation. "NeutralToken offers a new path forward: a decentralized, privacy-preserving protocol that protects both users and platforms."

Privacy-Preserving Compliance

NeutralToken enables platforms to verify user eligibility—such as age or membership—without collecting or exposing personally identifiable information (PII).

A Dual Benefit for Users and Platforms

NeutralToken empowers platforms—ranging from adult content publishers to age-restricted retailers—to meet legal mandates while respecting user privacy and avoiding liability from data breaches.

At the same time, the protocol supports broader goals of protecting online anonymity and free expression in an era of increasing regulatory oversight.
